{"id":6245,"date":"2012-02-09T11:21:56","date_gmt":"2012-02-09T17:21:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=6245"},"modified":"2013-03-11T13:51:09","modified_gmt":"2013-03-11T19:51:09","slug":"tax-exemption-proposed-for-social-security-benefits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=6245","title":{"rendered":"Tax exemption proposed for social security benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People receiving social security benefits could see a new tax exemption under a bill discussed in a Revenue Committee hearing Feb. 8.<\/p>\n<p>Under LB976, introduced by Omaha Sen. Jeremy Nordquist, social security benefits would not be figured into a person\u2019s federal adjusted gross income for tax purposes. Nordquist said the tax exemption would benefit seniors in every community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to continue to work across the board to relieve taxes for Nebraskans,\u201d Nordquist said. \u201cThis would benefit all seniors who have worked hard their entire lives and paid into the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James Cavanaugh of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants\u2019 Representatives testified in support of the bill, saying most seniors depend on their social security benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost people spend all of their benefits each month,\u201d Cavanaugh said. \u201cThis is a real hardship on people with limited resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jane Kleeb, Bold Nebraska founder, said as the baby boomer generation reaches retirement age, it is especially important that they stay in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe senior citizens are really the backbone of our communities,\u201d Kleeb said. \u201cWe want to make sure we keep them in Nebraska.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David Drozd, a research coordinator at the University of Nebraska at Omaha\u2019s Center for Public Affairs Research, testified in a neutral capacity.
