{"id":5701,"date":"2012-01-19T13:30:56","date_gmt":"2012-01-19T19:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=5701"},"modified":"2016-11-01T11:34:36","modified_gmt":"2016-11-01T17:34:36","slug":"chief%e2%80%99s-remarks-focus-on-vulnerable-nebraskans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=5701","title":{"rendered":"Chief\u2019s remarks focus on vulnerable Nebraskans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chief Justice Michael Heavican of the Nebraska Supreme Court delivered his State of the Judiciary address to the Legislature Jan. 19.<\/p>\n<p>Heavican\u2019s address focused on the judiciary\u2019s advancements in serving the state\u2019s children and elderly.<\/p>\n<p>Through a statewide working group, the courts have cooperated with the Legislature and executive branch officials to improve service delivery in child welfare cases and in juvenile and county courts, Heavican said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the state has addressed truancy by focusing on local-level solutions prior to formal court involvement, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy focusing our efforts on prevention and on diversion of truants before they enter the court system, all parties benefit,\u201d Heavican said. \u201cThe courts\u2019 resources should be reserved for the most difficult truancy cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nebraska also has been recognized as a national leader in protection of vulnerable adults, he said.<\/p>\n<p>By improving laws regarding guardianships and conservatorships, as well as increased training of court staff and financial institutions, Nebraska has strengthened protection for the state\u2019s vulnerable elderly population, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Heavican noted the importance of technology in improving access and efficiency in the state\u2019s judicial system.
