{"id":5679,"date":"2012-01-18T10:08:27","date_gmt":"2012-01-18T16:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=5679"},"modified":"2013-09-18T12:47:11","modified_gmt":"2013-09-18T18:47:11","slug":"bill-would-require-increased-educational-accountability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=5679","title":{"rendered":"Bill would require increased educational accountability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The state Board of Education would establish an expanded accountability structure under a new bill discussed by the Education Committee Jan. 17.<\/p>\n<p>LB870, introduced by York Sen. Greg Adams, would authorize the board to set performance and assessment indicators for students. The measures used under the new accountability structure would be established by the board by Aug. 1.<\/p>\n<p>Schools currently are held accountable for students\u2019 results on content area assessments. LB870 would add additional measures including student growth and improvement and graduation rates. Schools would be required to report the data annually.<\/p>\n<p>Adams said the intent of the bill is to establish a broader range of benchmarks for use in measuring a school\u2019s effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we look at content scores, there are a lot of things behind that number,\u201d he said. \u201cThis bill does not throw out what we\u2019re already doing, but expands what we measure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bob Evnen testified on behalf of the state Board of Education in support of the bill.
