Mark Kolterman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Step therapy is an insurance company practice in which a patient must fail a treatment selected by an insurance company before the company will cover a treatment originally prescribed by the patient\u2019s health care provider. LB337, introduced by Sen. Mark Kolterman of Seward, adopts the Step Therapy Reform Act.<\/p>\n<p>The bill allows a provider to request a step therapy override exception and requires that the override be granted if all of the following apply:<br \/>\n\u2022 a provider believes a drug prescribed under step therapy will be ineffective because of the drug\u2019s characteristics or the patient\u2019s experience with the drug;<br \/>\n\u2022 a patient previously was prescribed a drug that was ineffective;<br \/>\n\u2022 a patient successfully is being treated by a drug prescribed by his or her provider; and<br \/>\n\u2022 a drug required under step therapy is contraindicated by the drug manufacturer\u2019s prescribing information or the drug is likely to cause an adverse reaction, decrease a patient\u2019s ability to perform daily activities or cause mental or physical harm to the patient.<\/p>\n<p>LB337 also requires an insurance company to grant or deny a step therapy override within five days of receiving the request except in urgent care situations.<\/p>\n<p>Senators approved LB337 on a 47-0 vote.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Health care providers will have greater ability to prescribe treatments under a bill passed March 25.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"colormag_page_container_layout":"default_layout","colormag_page_sidebar_layout":"default_layout","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[6],"tags":[143],"class_list":["post-29806","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-banking-commerce-and-insurance","tag-sen-mark-kolterman"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/29806","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=29806"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/29806\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":29821,"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/29806\/revisions\/29821"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=29806"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=29806"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=29806"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
