Life has a way of interfering with the best laid plans of even the most meticulous of strategists. Lincoln Sen. Suzanne Geist learned this lesson early. The Arkansas native was two weeks away from earning her undergraduate degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and eager to take on the world when she was summoned for grand jury duty \u2014 jury duty that lasted a year and a half.<\/p>\n

Once released from jury duty, Geist found her original career plans detoured. So, with the encouragement of her husband Mark, she decided to forge a different path.<\/p>\n

She was a stay-at-home mom for a time to three now-grown children\u2014Alexis, John and Derek\u2014and held a variety of sales positions, including telecommuncations and pharmaceuticals. Most recently, she is self-employed as a style consultant and representative for a fashion line.<\/p>\n

Being a \u201cpeople person\u201d helps in sales, Geist said, and on the campaign trail, where she and Mark spent countless hours knocking on doors and listening to voters. While a great way to connect with constituents, the one-on-one campaign style left little time for bicycling, one of Geist\u2019s favorite hobbies. She said the couple, who\u2019ve been married for 32 years, would routinely ride several hours per week before campaign duties called.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing people learn about me pretty quickly is that I don\u2019t like to sit still,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Another warm weather favorite of the new senator is scuba diving.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would happily travel anywhere warm to scuba dive,\u201d Geist said, adding that she and her husband planned trips to Bonaire and Cozumel after the primary and general elections, with another on tap after the conclusion of her first session as a state senator.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s quiet, relaxing and inspiring,\u201d she said. \u201cPlus, there\u2019s always a warm beach nearby.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those who know her won\u2019t be surprised that Geist is drawn to a quiet hobby. Despite her years in sales, Geist describes herself as a strategic thinker who wants to be knowledgeable and fully prepared before entering any discussion.<\/p>\n

Her role model in that regard is former state senator and current U.S. Senator Deb Fischer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI watched her over the years in her political career,\u201d Geist said. \u201cShe\u2019s respected and admired because she thinks before she speaks and I appreciate her thoughtfulness. I like her style.\u201d<\/p>\n

Geist said her approach to the Legislature will mirror her approach to life in general: listen and learn.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have an agenda of specific issues or policy areas that I want to focus on,\u201d she said. \u201cMy agenda is to surround myself with great staff and knowledgeable people. I want to be the only one in my office with a learning curve,\u201d she said. \u201cThe best advice that I\u2019ve been given so far is to listen more than you talk.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although not involved in politics prior to her run for a seat in the Unicameral, Geist said she often found herself in leadership positions in any group that she joined.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt somehow always happened,\u201d she said with a smile, \u201cand I\u2019d think to myself, \u2018Can\u2019t someone else do this?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

As it turned out, that someone was Geist. After years of being an avid political observer, she expressed frustration regarding state politics to friends, and was encouraged to run for office. Upon reflection, Geist decided that since her children were grown it was a good time for her to become more involved in policy decisions that impact families like hers.<\/p>\n

\u201cHolding elective office was never a bucket list item for me,\u201d she said, \u201cbut I really am enjoying it so far.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her five young grandchildren\u2014all of whom live in Lincoln\u2014will provide a much needed reprieve from public life and add balance to the new senator\u2019s busy schedule.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeeing my grandchildren is always relaxing for me,\u201d she said. \u201cMy plan is to protect time with my family in spite of all the events that come with the office. Weekends are reserved for family time.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
