{"id":18456,"date":"2016-02-11T15:32:35","date_gmt":"2016-02-11T21:32:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=18456"},"modified":"2016-02-12T15:14:16","modified_gmt":"2016-02-12T21:14:16","slug":"immunity-for-victims-of-human-trafficking-proposed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=18456","title":{"rendered":"Immunity for victims of human trafficking proposed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Victims of human trafficking would be granted limited legal immunity under a bill discussed by the Judiciary Committee Feb. 10.<\/p>\n<p>LB843, introduced by Lincoln Sen. Patty Pansing Brooks, would provide legal immunity from prostitution charges for any person proven to be a victim of labor or sex trafficking. Pansing Brooks said the first step in addressing human trafficking is acknowledging its pervasiveness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trafficking of women, men and children in our state is the epitome of modern-day slavery,\u201d she said. \u201cWhile it seems impossible to most Nebraskans, human trafficking is present here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pending amendment would clarify that law enforcement would be responsible for determining whether a person engaging in prostitution is a victim of human trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>Al Riskowski, representing the Nebraska Family Alliance, supported the bill.
