{"id":14691,"date":"2014-02-19T11:43:19","date_gmt":"2014-02-19T17:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=14691"},"modified":"2014-02-19T11:43:19","modified_gmt":"2014-02-19T17:43:19","slug":"more-funds-requested-for-teacher-loan-forgiveness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=14691","title":{"rendered":"More funds requested for teacher loan forgiveness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students in teacher education programs could have a greater amount of student loans forgiven under a bill heard by the Education Committee Feb. 18.<\/p>\n<p>LB842, introduced by Hyannis Sen. Al Davis, would allocate an additional $200,000 in state lottery proceeds to the Excellence in Teaching Act. The annual funding for the act, which provides loan forgiveness to college students in teacher education programs and teachers in graduate level programs, would be increased to $1.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>Davis said providing loan forgiveness is important to keeping well-trained teachers in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFunding has not been adequate to meet the demand,\u201d he said. \u201cMany teachers have applied and have been turned away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Skyler Reising, a music teacher at Kloefkorn Elementary School in Lincoln, supported the bill.
