{"id":14297,"date":"2014-01-27T17:34:10","date_gmt":"2014-01-27T23:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=14297"},"modified":"2014-01-27T17:34:10","modified_gmt":"2014-01-27T23:34:10","slug":"new-school-security-director-proposed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=14297","title":{"rendered":"New school security director proposed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Increasing school safety would be the focus of a new position created under a bill heard by the Education Committee Jan. 27.<\/p>\n<p>LB872, introduced by Omaha Sen. Rick Kolowski, would create the position of statewide school security director within the state Department of Education. The director\u2019s responsibilities would include:<br \/>\n\u2022 collecting safety and security plans from each school district;<br \/>\n\u2022 recommending minimum standards and encouraging their adoption by the department;<br \/>\n\u2022 conducting a security assessment of every school;<br \/>\n\u2022 identifying deficiencies and recommending remedies; and<br \/>\n\u2022 establishing security awareness and preparedness tools and training programs for public school staff and students.<\/p>\n<p>Kolowski said families across the state are looking to legislators for leadership on the issue of school security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach student is entitled to a school environment that is free from violence, abuse and fear,\u201d he said. \u201cWe need to show our commitment to keeping their schools safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brian Halstead, representing the state Department of Education, supported the bill, saying it would address just one part of school safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrently we have no staff members that have training or background in safety and security,\u201d he said. \u201cIf we have the resources to assist to attempt to address this on a systematic basis, we want to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Representing the Nebraska State Education Association, Larry Scherer testified in support of the bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issue of safety and security needs to be paramount and this is a good first step,\u201d Scherer said.<\/p>\n<p>No one testified in opposition to the bill and the committee took no immediate action on it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Increasing school safety would be the focus of a new position created under a bill heard by the Education Committee<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"colormag_page_container_layout":"default_layout","colormag_page_sidebar_layout":"default_layout","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[8],"tags":[68],"class_list":["post-14297","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-education","tag-sen-rick-kolowski"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/14297","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=14297"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/14297\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":14298,"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/14297\/revisions\/14298"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=14297"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=14297"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=14297"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
