{"id":14095,"date":"2014-01-15T12:00:59","date_gmt":"2014-01-15T18:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=14095"},"modified":"2014-01-15T12:00:59","modified_gmt":"2014-01-15T18:00:59","slug":"county-office-candidates-could-automatically-advance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=14095","title":{"rendered":"County office candidates could automatically advance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senators gave first-round approval Jan. 14 to a bill that would allow for automatic advancement in the case of a small pool of candidates for county office.<\/p>\n<p>Under LB56, if the number of county office candidates from each party in the primary election does not exceed the number of candidates that may be nominated by the party, those candidates automatically would advance to the general election.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Neill Sen. Tyson Larson, the sponsor of the bill, said it would benefit all 93 counties in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Primary election ballots] represent money taken away from other areas in the county budget,\u201d he said. \u201cThis would streamline the election process and lower overall costs associated with these elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Omaha Sen. Scott Lautenbaugh supported the bill, calling automatic advancement a common, reasonable idea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything we can do to simplify an election when there is no opposition would be a significant cost saving for the county,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hoskins Sen. Dave Bloomfield opposed the measure.
