{"id":12161,"date":"2013-05-30T15:06:11","date_gmt":"2013-05-30T21:06:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=12161"},"modified":"2013-09-05T08:18:19","modified_gmt":"2013-09-05T14:18:19","slug":"tax-modernization-committee-plan-approved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=12161","title":{"rendered":"Tax modernization committee plan approved"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senators passed a resolution May 30 that establishes the Tax Modernization Committee to review and recommend updates to Nebraska\u2019s tax code.<\/p>\n<p>Under LR155, introduced by Omaha Sen. Ernie Chambers, the committee will continually review and recommend updates to Nebraska\u2019s tax code. Chambers said the committee\u2019s focus will be on gathering information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The committee] is not starting with the notion that the ultimate outcome will be a recommendation to slash the tax system,\u201d he said. \u201cThe committee will not be creating a framework or structure. They will be producing a report and if the conclusion is that the process or system must be change, the report would tell the Legislature what needs to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The committee is directed to consider fairness, competitiveness, simplicity and compliance, stability, adequacy and complementary tax systems as it evaluates Nebraska\u2019s current tax code.<\/p>\n<p>The committee comprises the members of the Revenue Committee and the chairperson of the following committees:\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Appropriations, Health and Human Services, Education, Agriculture and Planning. Two other members of the Legislature will be selected to serve on the committee by the Executive Board of the Legislative Council.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Lincoln Sen. Bill Avery supported the resolution, saying it provides a unique opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to make sure we\u2019re taxing the things that need to be taxed and doing it consistently,\u201d he said. \u201cI have no doubt we will benefit significantly from this study.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The committee will provide a preliminary report to the Legislature and the governor by Dec. 15 and a final report is due by Nov. 15, 2014.
