{"id":10899,"date":"2013-03-19T07:49:35","date_gmt":"2013-03-19T13:49:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=10899"},"modified":"2013-09-06T12:46:24","modified_gmt":"2013-09-06T18:46:24","slug":"bill-would-overturn-pledge-of-allegiance-requirement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/update.legislature.ne.gov\/?p=10899","title":{"rendered":"Bill would overturn pledge of allegiance requirement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Education Committee heard testimony March 18 on a bill that would make reciting the pledge of allegiance in public schools voluntary.<\/p>\n<p>LB540, introduced by Omaha Sen. Ernie Chambers, would nullify a rule adopted last year by the state Department of Education requiring that all public school students be led in the pledge of allegiance to the United States flag every day that school is in session.<\/p>\n<p>The rule allows a student to opt out of saying the pledge. Chambers said the rule coerces students, teachers and parents to comply out of fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny child who behaves differently is marked \u2018odd child out,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cThere can be serious negative repercussions in a community because some people equate whether or not you say this pledge with being a patriot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mike Lewis, chairman of the Nebraska Secular Advocates, supported the bill, saying that the pledge forces nonreligious people to acknowledge the existence of God.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAtheists are just as proud to be Americans as people who are religious,\u201d Lewis said. \u201cThis rule needlessly sets students and teachers apart, making them seem unpatriotic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Representing the Nebraska Disabled Veterans, Greg Holloway opposed the bill.
