Bill introduction begins

Senators reconvened Jan. 10 to begin bill introduction for the 103rd Legislature, first session.

Among the measures introduced were:

  • LB5, sponsored by Omaha Sen. Bob Krist, which would exempt social security benefits and military retirement income from income taxation;
  • LB18, sponsored by Omaha Sen. Jeremy Nordquist, which would prohibit members of the Legislature and certain constitutional officers from participating in the state insurance program;
  • LB34, sponsored by Kearney Sen. Galen Hadley, which would change provisions of the Nebraska Advantage Act;
  • LB41, sponsored by Omaha Sen. Tanya Cook, which would provide for a permanent early voting request list and return of early voting ballots to polling places;
  • LB50, sponsored by Omaha Sen. Brad Ashford, which would prohibit unreasonable placement of a firearm where a minor may unlawfully possess it;
  • LB57, sponsored by O’Neill Sen. Tyson Larson, which would change provisions relating to grants from the Nebraska Environmental Trust Fund;
  • LB65, sponsored by Ogallala Sen. Ken Schilz, which would authorize counties to set sheriff’s fees and commissions;
  • LB81, sponsored by Columbus Sen. Paul Schumacher, which would provide an income tax deduction for corporate dividends;
  • LB101, sponsored by Syracuse Sen. Dan Watermeier, which would change valuation of agricultural and horticultural land; and
  • LR2CA, sponsored by Omaha Sen. Pete Pirsch, which would amend the Nebraska Constitution to require that any bill that imposes or increases a tax be approved by a majority of the members of the Legislature plus four.

New bills may be introduced for the first 10 legislative days, or until Jan. 23.

The session will last 90 legislative days and tentatively is scheduled to adjourn June 5.
